Under NAU Personnel Policy 2.08 Rest and Meal Periods, non-exempt employees may have a paid break of up to fifteen minutes each morning and fifteen minutes each afternoon during regularly assigned hours. This break should follow an extended period of work and another period of work should follow it. They cannot be used to come in late or end work early. The breaks cannot be combined into a thirty-minute break or accumulated for vacation or other time off and are forfeited if not taken.

Non-exempt employees are also authorized to take a one hour unpaid meal period each work day. Since this meal period is unpaid, the employee must be completely relieved of work duties during the period and, whenever possible, free to leave the work site.

If the non-exempt employee is working an approved alternate work schedule that includes a reduced lunch period, that lunch period can be no shorter than 30 minutes. (See NAU Personnel Policy 2.07 Flexible Schedules)
