SUMMARY:

This position is typically responsible for an overall work unit (for example, Payroll or Accounts Payable offices) or a large program or section of a department. Managers of programs or departmental areas are generally also considered to be part of the department's management team, in addition to having responsibilities for specialized areas and programs. Managers typically report to a department director or dean.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:

The manager position typically has greater overall responsibility for a work unit or program than a coordinator level position.

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The following are examples of typical duties. Other duties may be assigned. Essential duties should be identified on a more specific working job description.

  • Responsible for the overall management of a work unit or departmental area.
  • Oversees the activities of subordinate supervisors.
  • Typically responsible for supervision of professional and support staff.
  • May also supervise other professional employees, support staff, students and volunteers.
  • Responsible for work unit budgeting, personnel activities, customer relations, training and staffing plans.
  • May be responsible for managing a specialized program or area, such as marketing, program development or information technology.
  • Ensures university compliance with local, state and federal laws, regulations and requirements.
  • Recommends and/or initiates actions involving discipline, promotion, transfer and motivation of employees.
  • Initiates measures to improve customer service, use of technology, employee professionalism and communication.
  • Develop, implement and evaluate major programs and/or projects.

QUALIFICATIONS:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

  • Excellent supervisory, organizational and training skills
  • Skill in program development and execution
  • Skill in coordinating activities, evaluating data, and establishing priorities.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills
  • Awareness and commitment to NAU's EEO/Affirmative Action and Safe Working and Learning Environment goals.
  • Working knowledge of the principles and procedures of the assigned work unit.
  • Ability to work independently
  • Related university experience dealing with area of assignment is helpful.
  • Appropriate certification desired

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

Typically requires a bachelors degree in area of assignment. In some cases a masters degree may be preferred. Required experience can range from 2-9 years, depending on education required and the individual position.
