SUMMARY:

A professional management position having responsibility for directing the entire operations of a defined unit or sub-unit of the University. This position operates with broad authority and is usually a member of a broader university administrative leadership team.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:

The director position differs from an Administrative Director, Associate Director or Project Director in that it has primary responsibility for the entire operations of a defined work unit. The director typically reports directly to the Vice President or Associate Provost of the associated area.

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The following are examples of typical duties. Other duties may be assigned. Essential duties should be identified on a more specific working job description.

  • Provides leadership and vision for the work unit
  • Sets goals for the work unit and organizes resources to achieve the goals
  • Aligns departmental goals with the university mission statement
  • Responsible for supervision and goal setting of professional and support staff
  • Contributes as a strategic member of a administrative leadership team
  • Responsible for the implementing and maintaining area budget
  • Responsible for providing strategic reports and recommendations to NAU administration on the activity in assigned areas.
  • Responsible for program development and evaluation
  • Represents the department on university and community committees
  • Demonstrates a commitment to Diversity and NAU’s Affirmative Action Plan.

QUALIFICATIONS:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

  • Excellent supervisory, organizational, and training skills
  • Experience managing a large complicated budget
  • Skill in program development and execution
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills
  • Documented success as an innovator and creative problem solver

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

Typically requires a master’s degree in area of assignment. Required experience can range from 6-10 years, depending on the individual position.
