SUMMARY:

This position typically coordinates a specific area or program within a department or work unit. Coordination may include responsibilities such as administrative, operations, technical or financial duties. Position may have coordination responsibilities for programs, such as student retention programs or administrative programs.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:

This position differs from manager positions in that it is primarily focused on the project or program being coordinated, rather than having responsibility for the entire work unit. This position typically coordinates larger and more complex programs, than a program coordinator, senior staff position.

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The following are examples of typical duties. Other duties may be assigned. Essential duties should be identified on a more specific working job description.

  • Responsible for the overall coordination of the program or area of work assignment.
  • Oversees the activities of subordinate supervisors.
  • Typically responsible for supervision of classified staff.
  • May also supervise students and volunteers.
  • Coordinate available resources to best achieve areas goals and objectives.
  • Responsible for budgeting.
  • May be responsible for managing a specialized program or area, such as marketing, publications, program development or specific projects.
  • Implements goals and objectives and evaluates effectiveness of program or area, based on completion of these goals.
  • Recommends and/or initiates actions involving discipline, promotion, transfer and motiation of employees.
  • Develop, implement and evaluate major programs and/or projects.

QUALIFICATIONS:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

  • Excellent supervisory, organizational and training skills
  • Skill in program development and execution
  • Skill in coordinating activities, evaluating data, and establishing priorities.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills
  • Awareness and commitment to NAU's EEO/Affirmative Action Plan and Safe Working and Learning Environment goals.
  • Ability to analyze problems and make well-reasoned, sound decisions.
  • Related university experience dealing with area of assignment is helpful.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

Typically requires a bachelor's degree in area of assignment. In some cases a masters degree may be preferred. Required experience can range from 2-9 years of progressively responsible coordinating experience, depending on education required and the individual position.
