Northern Arizona University values safety in the workplace for each and every member of the NAU community. The following resources are available to help determine safety training needs.

Supervisors or employees who are unsure about the safety training required for their work should contact the Office of Regulatory Compliance.
Supervisors or employees who are unsure about the fire emergency procedures or evacuation protocol for their areas should contact Safety and Environmental Services

Provides the following open classes on a regular basis:

  • Chemical Hygiene OSHA Lab Training
    Required yearly for anyone who could be exposed to, works with or handles chemicals.
  • Basic Biosafety and Infectious Materials Training
    Required once for anyone who could be exposed to, works with, or handles biological agents.
  • Blood-borne Pathogen Training
    Required yearly for anyone who could come into contact with human fluids, tissue, cell lines or any non-human primate materials.
  • Hazardous Materials Shipping and Handling (Dangerous Goods)Training
    Required every two years for anyone who either receives or ships any chemical, biological or radioactive material.

Provides site/group specific classes such as: 

Benzene Indoor air quality
Compressed gas safety Ladder safety
Confined space safety Lock out tag out procedures
Ergonomics training and assessment Personal protection equipment
Formaldehyde Power truck safety
General safety training Radiation safety
Hand tool safety Respiratory protection

Safety and Environmental Services – 523-4227

Provides fire safety information, emergency procedure information, evacuation protocol and assistance in reviewing departmental evacuation plans.

Provides training such as:

Asbestos training Forklift training
CPR and automated external defibrillator (AED) training Fire evacuation training
Machine guarding Fire extinguisher training
Proper use of power tools Fire prevention and fire hazard training
Safe lifting  

 

Additional Safety Training Information

ABC’s of Safety

This one-page handout can be used as a periodic general safety reminder for all employees and supervisors. (This is also distributed at Human Resource’s New Employee Orientation.)

Emergency Procedures
Addresses appropriate procedures for fire, medical, bomb threats, etc. This document is meant for posting and/or for employees to have within easy access.

ErgoSmart

This software program provides a step-by-step method for employees to do a quick ergonomic assessment of their own workstation. Log in to the ITS software download page and type ErgoSmart in the keyword search.

NAU Police Department

Presentations are offered on topics such as violence in the workplace and personal safety/theft prevention.

NAU’s Safety Policy (5.03)

This policy shares expectations of all NAU employees and special responsibilities for supervisors.

Supervisor’s Report of Injury/Illness Form

A supervisor must fill out this report when an accident or work-related health problem occurs in the workplace.
