Is the legislated 1.7% general adjustment increase part of the merit increase?
The 1.7% general adjustment was allocated for all state employees. In addition, President Haeger has approved money for merit increases at NAU. For Classified Staff and Service Professional employees who are eligible for the merit increase, the 1.7% has been included in the percentages listed in the eligibility criteria.
If I am not eligible for the merit increase, do I still receive the 1.7% general adjustment increase?
If you were hired into an eligible position by July 2, 2005, you will receive the 1.7% general adjustment increase.
When is the 1.7% general adjustment effective?
The effective date for the general adjustment is July 2, 2005.
When is the merit increase effective?
The effective date for the merit increase is July 2, 2005.
When will I see the merit and/or general adjustment increase in my paycheck?
For most employees, the paycheck of July 22nd will show a full payroll period at the new salary level. Some eligible employees who work the weekend of July 2nd and 3rd will have those two days at the new salary level show up in their paycheck of July 8, 2005.
How do I know if I qualify for a merit increase?
To qualify for a merit raise, a Classified Staff or Service Professional employee must meet all the following:
- regular, benefit eligible or classified staff regular hourly (non-benefit eligible)
- hired into that eligible position on or before July 2, 2004 with no breaks in service in the past year
- been on ‘active status’ (not on leave) for equal to or greater than 182.5 calendar days between July 2, 2004 and July 2, 2005 (prorated for employees who work less than a full year)
- a current performance appraisal rating of 3 (proficient) or above
If I received an adjustment in salary for the Classified Staff re-grade, will I still be eligible for the merit increase?
Yes. Those employees who received an increase due to the Classified Staff re-grade, and who meet the eligibility criteria for the general adjustment and/or the merit increase, will still receive that increase. The percentage increase will be calculated from the new re-grade salary.
What if I was promoted or transferred during this past year?
A promotion or transfer to a different job at NAU will not impact eligibility for a merit raise as long as all the following apply:
- employment is continuous
- the positions both meet the eligibility criteria
- you have a current performance appraisal score of 3 or higher
- leave of absence time for the year prior (July 2, 2004 – July 2, 2005) is not more than 182.5 calendar days total
Does a classified staff probationary period count toward the year of service requirement for the merit increase?
Yes. As long as the classified staff member was hired into an eligible position on or before July 2, 2004 they will be eligible for the increase.
I’m currently on an approved leave of absence. Am I still eligible for the salary increases?
Yes. If you meet all the eligibility criteria, you’ll receive the increase. If you are on paid leave, the increase will take effect July 2, 2005. If you are on unpaid leave, the increase will take effect when you return to paid status.
I am currently on an approved leave of absence and have not received my performance appraisal. How will I receive a merit increase?
After returning to work and receiving a performance appraisal, if you meet all of the eligibility criteria, your merit increase would be calculated retroactive to July 2, 2005 or, if you were on unpaid leave, to the date of your return to paid status.
I was on approved leave of absence twice over the last year. Do I still qualify for the merit increase?
Only if the cumulative time off for the two leaves of absence did not exceed 182.5 days between July 2, 2004 and July 2, 2005 and you meet the other eligibility criteria.
If an employee transferred to NAU from another state agency, does the time at the other agency count toward the length of service requirement for the merit increase?
No. The one year of service must be at NAU.
What is considered a current performance appraisal?
For Classified Staff, any appraisal dated June 1, 2004 (six months prior to the Classified Staff appraisal due date of November 30) or later is considered current. For Service Professionals, any performance appraisals dated August 1, 2004 (six months prior to the Service Professional due date of January 31) or later is considered current.
Will I receive a written salary notice about my increase?
Yes. During the week of July 18 – 22, salary notices will be sent to all employees who are receiving an increase.
What if I have a salary adjustment or job reclassification that has not been processed prior to the effective date of the increase?
If you are eligible for the increase, it will be applied to your current salary, but will be recalculated (and retroactive to July 2, 2005) based on any final approved change in title and/or compensation.
What if I’m on a special assignment?
If you are on a special assignment and are eligible for the increase, your increase will be based on your current (special assignment) title, salary and performance appraisal score. When you return from special assignment to your original position, your increase will be recalculated based on the title and salary from that original position.
Is there any difference for a grant or locally funded employee?
No. All eligible employees will receive the salary increases regardless of funding source.
