SUMMARY:
The Assistant Dean plans, organizes, and directs the day-to-day operations of a department under administrative direction and typically serves as a resource and referral source for students seeking various types of assistance. 
 
 
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
An Assistant Dean typically reports to the Associate Dean, Dean, or Director of the associated area.
 
 
TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The following are examples of typical duties. Other duties may be assigned. Essential duties should be identified on a more specific working job description. 
 
  •  Assists Associate Dean in department operations.
  • Supervises and coordinates various department activities.
  • Serves as a resource and referral source for students seeking various types of assistance.
  • Serves on University councils, committees, work groups, and other bodies.
  • Works as a liaison for the local community and especially local bodies of higher education.
  • Develops and implements strategic planning specific to programs within the department including marketing and staffing.
  • Collaborates with the Dean and other department entities to oversee the academic program and ensure quality faculty and student support services.
  • Provides direction and assistance in preparation of budget requests; monitors budgeting expenditures at all levels. 
QUALIFICATIONS:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
  • Excellent supervisory, organizational and training skills.
  • Excellent verbal/written communication and presentation skills.
  • Ability to work as part of a team.
  • Ability to work with people from a variety of culturally diverse backgrounds.
  • Skills in development, implementation and execution of programs. 
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
Typically requires a master’s degree in area of assignment.  Required experience can range from a minimum of four to seven years depending on the individual position.
