SUMMARY:
An Area Coordinator in Distance Learning typically works at a location away from the main campus, throughout Arizona.  They are responsible for overseeing staff at the service area and communicating with the main campus.  Area Coordinators implement effective programs using IITV and the web.  They are responsible for off-campus public relations, recruiting students to programs in the service area and marketing programs that are offered. 
 
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
An Area Coordinator would be required to travel to Flagstaff from their designated service area.  They are required to have extensive knowledge of many NAU policies and procedures, particularly those that concern students.   
 
TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The following are examples of typical duties.  Other duties may be assigned.  Essential duties should be identified on a more specific working job description.
  • Recruits new students and promotes NAU on-site academic programs and distance learning programs
  • Arranges for high quality advising of students regarding coursework needed for their respective programs; assures that advisors are trained to make optimum use of electronic advising resources; advise students as needed
  • Supports and coordinates student services including admission, registration, and other support services through the Internet and on-site.  Assures the delivery of such services in a cost effective manner, using central support whenever possible
  • Fosters student self-sufficiency and helps students learn to make maximum use of web resources for self-service functions such as admissions applications, registration, financial aid, and library research
  • Provides timely and thorough assistance to students who encounter problems with admission, registration, financial aid and similar matters. Helps students learn to communicate with Mountain Campus offices and personnel to resolve problems, being sensitive to cultural needs and limitations.
  • Assists students in acclimating to and succeeding in web-based and web-assisted courses and degree programs.
  • Works with academic units and full time faculty to implement the highest quality courses, programs, and services.
  • Prepares a schedule of courses being offered each semester. Arranges for distribution of these schedules throughout the designated area.
  • Collaborates with individuals, agencies and institutions to determine need and demand for courses and academic programs and services.
  • Disseminates information concerning NAU on-site and distance learning programs, courses and services available in the region.
  • Consult with and develop positive relationships with colleges and departments in response to demand for programs throughout the service areas and negotiate the feasibility and execution of delivery of those programs
  • Monitor and assess the success of programs and regularly report back to colleges and departments.
  • Oversee the planning, development, and adjustments to the entire service area’s course scheduling each semester.
  • Liaison with colleges and departments to plan the origination and delivery of IITV courses at the service areas
  • Recruits and supports part time instructors to teach in NAU academic programs, under the supervision of the academic units; assures that part time instructors are trained in using NAU web resources such as online grade submission processes, FERPA training, etc.
  • Consults with faculty to develop administrative and logistical support for courses and to provide briefings and up-dates on University administrative policy, requirements and expectations related to Statewide Campus courses.
  • Provides office management functions; supervise and evaluate staff in designated area
  • Provide guidance and support to Program Coordinators to help meet enrollment growth targets.  Implement a comprehensive training plan for all staff in the service area 
  • Assist Program Coordinators with the implementation of centralized support services for NAU academic programs, including advising, admission, registration, and graduation functions
  • Implement and assist service areas with enrollment management strategies and reporting.  Prepare annual budget requests in collaboration with the Distributed Learning Services Director. 
  • Provide direct supervision, support and assistance to program coordinators in the designated area to ensure they are meeting enrollment growth targets
  • Market the NAU Distance Learning Programs within the area communities, utilizing schools, local organizations, and government entities to recruit students to NAU programs
 
QUALIFICATIONS:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each duty satisfactorily.  The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required.
  • Knowledge of geography, demographics, educational institutions and other public and private agencies in the designated service area
  • Knowledge of and sensitivity to diversity issues related to effective communication and interactions with persons from diverse cultural backgrounds and non-traditional students of all age ranges, social backgrounds, and experience level
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills required
  • Experience overseeing, guiding, developing and assessing staff, and allocation and assignment of staff to meet department priorities and deadlines
  • Excellent supervisory, organizational and training skills
  • Knowledge of procedures, operations, and standard organizational structures and principles of higher education institutions
  • Knowledge and skill in Microsoft Office 2000; MS Word, Excel, Access, Internet, and electronic messaging – Eudora preferred.  Knowledge of internet communication and capabilities, and web functions available at NAU.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
Typically requires a master’s degree in the field of education, administration, student services or other related field.  Required experience is typically two years of full-time teaching or administrative experience in public schools or higher education.
