SUMMARY:
This position typically coordinates a specific area in the Residence Life Department. Coordination will include responsibilities such as staff and student development and support, administrative, operations, facilities or financial duties.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
An Area Coordinator is responsible for overseeing one or more residence hall and/or family complexes. They supervise the Residence Hall Director and the multiple Resident Assistants in the residence hall. An Area Coordinator reports to the Associate Director of Residence Life.
TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The following are examples of typical duties. Other duties may be assigned. Essential duties should be identified on a more specific working job description.
- Direct supervision of residence hall and/or family housing staffing in an area of campus ranging from approximately 1500 to 2400 residents. The scope of the responsibility is based on the number of buildings, the number of residents, the number of senior staff, graduate assistants, and other departmental responsibilities as assigned.
- Management of daily administrative processes and maintenance/custodial priorities
- Coordination of Central Staff responsibilities assigned by the Associate Director, including course instruction, staff development, recruitment/selection, leadership development, administrative processes and project support for other Central Staff
- Coordination and development of annual individual staff development plans and departmental goals and objectives for area staff
- Promote and demonstrate the department’s commitment to creating an environment that values and respects each individual, and integrates a celebration of differences
QUALIFICATIONS:

- Knowledge and skill in supervisory practices and techniques
- Effective written and oral communication skills
- Ability to establish and maintain effective student/staff relationships
- Knowledge of counseling, conflict management and crisis intervention strategies
- Sound organizational and administrative skills
- Understanding of basic budget processes and preparing detailed reports
- Familiarity with facilities maintenance and custodial processes
- Application and practice of student development approaches
- Understanding of academic support services within residential settings
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
Typically requires a Master’s degree in Student Personnel, Counseling, Behavioral Science or a related field. This position typically requires two years experience in Housing/Residence Life.
