Steps for Hiring Temporary Employees   Print

According to NAU personnel policy a temporary, classified staff employee, who is on NAU’s payroll, is defined as “one who is hired to work up to forty hours per week for no more than 19 weeks in a fiscal year or for up to one year at less than twenty hours a week."

There are two ways departments can hire temporary employees at NAU.  The prefered way is to hire the temporary employee through an outside temporary employment agency.  The other way is to hire a temporary employee through NAU's payroll.  The following links provide information on hiring temporary employees through the two methods mentioned above.

Why should I hire temporary employees through an agency, rather than hiring NAU temporary employees?

  • More flexibility.

NAU is forced to restrict the amount of time an employee may work as a temporary on NAU's payroll. If you hire the employee through one of the above agencies, you will not need to restrict the amount of time a temporary employee works for you.

  • Benefits for the employee.

The employee may be eligible for benefits through the temporary agency.

  • Save your time.

You can reduce the amount of time you spend on payroll processing. Processing timesheets through the temporary agencies is much less time consuming than the NAU process.

  • Lower costs.

The NAU cost to hire a temp through an agency is often lower overall. The temporary agencies pay all mandatory payroll taxes, provide worker's comp coverage and unemployment insurance as well as process the hire and payroll for the employee. Therefore, the cost to NAU is often lower than hiring the employee as an NAU employee.

  • Qualified staff available quickly.

The agencies have identified and tested staff so that you do not need to recruit, test, and hire employees for temporary positions.

  • Easy to begin and end employment.

Terminating the employee is much less complicated. When the assignment ends, you simply need to notify the agency that the employee was not meeting your needs. They will provide you with another temporary employee as soon as possible, again avoiding the need to identify another temporary employee on your own.
