Health, Dental, and Vision Insurance
Retirees may continue their medical insurance (health, dental, and/or vision) through the Arizona Department of Administration (ADOA) Arizona Benefit Options (AzBO) program. This includes the NAU-only Blue Cross Blue Shield PPO plan. If an individual declines the ADOA AzBO insurance plan (health, dental, or vision) they cannot obtain coverage at a later date. Retiring employees have an additional health and/or dental insurance plan available through the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS). A retiree can determine if their physician participates in the BCBS PPO by using the provider directory on the BCBS website. Be sure to select the Blue Preferred PPO option.
Retirees on the NAU Blue Cross Blue Shield plan are eligible for the wellness programs and short-term counseling and referral services offered by the Employee Assistance and wellness office (EAW). Participants on the NAU BCBS plan also have access to counseling services through Arizona Biodyne (1-800-224-2125). Retirees enrolled in state health insurance plans are eligible to attend Wellness Workshop Series programs.

Life Insurance
Upon retiring, employees may convert two of their optional life insurance policies to individual policies. Insurance plans not eligible to be continued into retirement, such as short-term and long-term disability will end on the last day worked.

Aetna Life: Employees enrolled in Aetna Life Insurance upon retirement may continue coverage if they were enrolled in Aetna Life Insurance as an active employee. Currently, the retiree group policy is $10,000 of coverage for an annual premium of $156.00. Premiums are subject to change. To obtain an enrollment form contact NAU Human Resources at 928-523-2223
Standard: Employees may elect to establish individual coverage through Standard Life Insurance. Standard Life Insurance will mail you a conversion card to elect/decline coverage. Premiums are made directly to Standard.
ACCRUED LEAVE
Sick
Retiree Accumulated Sick Leave (RASL) Program
Active NAU employees retiring with a minimum of 500 hours of accrued sick leave and who have established their retirement within 14 days of separation from the University qualify for the Arizona Dept of Administration (ADOA) Retiree Accumulated Sick Leave (RASL) program. Employees must contact the appropriate State Retirement System (ASRS, ORP and PSPRS) directly to apply for retirement. RASL payments are distributed in three equal payments over 3 years. The first payment usually arrives 90 days after separation. Unused sick leave under 500 hours will not be paid.
RASL Deferred Compensation Option
Retirees separating from service after May 31, 2006 may defer their first RASL payment to a 457(b) plan with the State-sponsored deferred compensation provider, Nationwide Retirement Solutions. Maximum deferral amount is subject to FICA and Medicare withholdings.

Vacation
Accrued vacation time up to the maximum (176 hours for full-time employees) will be paid out on the last paycheck. Unused vacation above the maximum will NOT be paid, but can be transferred using Compassionate Transfer of Leave (CTL).
Comp Time
All accrued comp time will be paid out on the last paycheck.
ADDITIONAL BENEFITS
ID Cards are automatically updated to retiree status. Retirees must keep their ID to be eligible for the following benefits:
Educational Aid
This program allows retirees and their eligible dependents to take advantage of educational opportunities at any of the three state universities at reduced tuition rates. Retirees will receive the same tuition benefit they received as employees. To qualify, retirees must have completed at least (5) years of continuous, full time employment in the Arizona university system immediately preceding retirement, who are receiving a retirement annuity under and Arizona university-sponsored retirement program and who are least fifty (50) years old, and whose employment has not been terminated for cause by the university are eligible to participate.
NAU Bookstore
Retirees will receive a 10% discount on most purchases at the NAU bookstore.
Recreation Center and the Wall Aquatic Center
Retirees may continue to receive discounted prices at these NAU facilities.
Cline Library
Parking Permit
Retirees may receive a free annual parking permit by joining the NAU Retirees Association (NAURA). Membership information and an application can be found on the NAURA website. Once your NAURA membership is active, permits may be acquired through Parking Services.
Retiree Responsibility
Notification
In the event of an address change or a qualified life event occurs, retirees are responsible for contacting ADOA. Such qualified life events may include:
- Medicare eligibility (Retiree or Spouse turns age 65)
- Death (Retiree or Spouse)
- Dependent becomes ineligible
Payroll Deductions
Additional payroll deductions such as A+ Auto, Arizona Credit Union, United Way or NAU Recreation Center/Wall Aquatic Center will end on the last paycheck. It is the employee’s responsibility to contact any vendors to arrange for continuation of payment.
Flexible Spending Accounts
If you are currently participating in a Flexible Spending Account (FSA), please notify the Human Resource Department in advance of your intent to retire. We will work with you to coordinate payroll deductions appropriate for meeting your pledge. We will also counsel you on your options for continuing your coverage under separation. Please be aware that upon separation, FSA benefits will end unless you have made special arrangements. Detailed information on your FSA account and option upon separation may be acquired by contacting ASI.
COBRA
Retirees can expect to receive a COBRA packet from the NAU Human Resources office shortly after their last day of work. NAU is required by law to provide employees separating from the University COBRA information and enrollment forms. If you have made an election to continue medical coverage as a retiree, please disregard this packet.
PAR
Employees are responsible for communicating with the department or the President’s office their intent to retire. The department will process a “retirement” PAR and submit it to the Human Resources Department. Employees are encouraged to ensure their department follows through with the PAR process.
