The Shared Work Program is offered through the Arizona Department of Economic Security (DES). It allows NAU employees impacted by furloughs to collect a portion of the Unemployment Insurance benefits available to them. The Shared Work Program allows NAU employees whose weekly hours are to reduced because of furloughs by 10-40% to receive a corresponding percentage of Unemployment Insurance benefits.
How it works:
- You complete the Shared Work Application Materials and submit them to NAU Human Resources. It is recommended that you turn in your application at least 2 weeks before taking furlough time to avoid delays in receiving your benefit payments.
- You serve a “waiting week”. The first week you take furlough you will not receive any Shared Work benefits. You must, however, still take at least 10% of your weekly hours (4 hours if you work 40 hours/week) of furlough during this “waiting week”.
- After your waiting week, each week you take between 10% and 40% of your weekly hours as furlough. Human Resources will submit a claim to the Shared Work Program for you.
- Three weeks (or so) later you will receive your Shared Work benefit payment from DES.
- Payment is made to a Chase Bank debit card issued to you by DES. Forms are available with the application materials.
How much will I receive?
NAU employees will receive between $4.70 – 6.00/ hour for each hour of furlough time taken. When you apply for Shared Work, DES will determine your benefits based upon your earnings. You can find more information about the wage calculation in the Arizona Guide to Unemployment Insurance.

Federal Stimulus “Bonus”
At this time, until further notice, for each week you collect Shared Work benefits you will receive an additional $25, regardless of the number of Shared Work hours for which you are paid.
Tax Considerations
Unemployment insurance benefits are taxable. However, in 2009 as a part of the Federal Stimulus Package, the first $2400 of unemployment insurance benefits are exempt from federal tax. You will receive a Form 1099G early in 2010 that will tell you the total you received.
Other Considerations:
Court-ordered child support payments are deducted from Shared Work benefits. If this pertains to you, you need to contact the Division of Child Support Enforcement and explain the unemployment benefits you are being paid. Call 1-800-882-4151 or visit their website at www.azdes.gov/dcse.
