These questions are supplemental to the general FAQ’s for all university employees.

How will the amount of furlough time be calculated for faculty and administrative faculty?

For faculty and administrative faculty, required furlough time is based on actual salary and contract length and then rounded to the nearest whole hour:

  • Those whose salaries are under $40,000 per year are responsible for taking one furlough day (8 hours for 12 month contracts and prorated for reduced contract periods and/or reduced FTE) during fiscal year 2010.
  • Those whose salaries are $40,000 or more per year are responsible for taking three furlough days (24 hours for 12 month contracts and prorated for reduced contract periods and/or reduced FTE) during fiscal year 2010.
  • Number of required furlough hours will be based on the contract period:
Faculty under $40,000 (1 day) Faculty $40,000 or over (3 days)
12 month contract = 8 hours 12 month contract = 24 hours
11 month contract = 7 hours
11 month contract = 22 hours
10 month contract = 7 hours
10 month contract = 20 hours
  9 month contract = 6 hours
  9 month contract = 18 hours

If I work over 9 months but get paid over 12, is my furlough time calculated on 9 months or 12 months?
If your contract is a 9 month contract, then your furlough time is calculated on the 9 month contract – regardless of how you have your actual pay distributed.

If I have to take furlough days will my Statement of Expectations be adjusted?
It’s not anticipated that furlough would be a significant issue in most cases since the furlough time can be spread over the whole contract period. Furlough time can be taken during spring/winter break times, holidays, and in one hour increments or more during any regularly scheduled work period (other than teaching time or required departmental meetings). If there is some special circumstance that warrants a review or modification of the Statement of Expectations, it would be up to the department leadership.

During the summer when I’m off contract, I teach as part-time faculty. Will I have to take furlough for that role?
No. Your furlough time will be calculated on your regular contract. Supplemental pay will not be subject to furlough requirements.

If I’m on sabbatical am I required to take furlough time?
Yes. If you will be on a one semester sabbatical at your regular salary, the required furlough is calculated on your full academic year salary. If you will be on an academic year sabbatical at a reduced salary, the required furlough is calculated on the reduced salary.

Example:
  • A faculty member whose salary is $50,000 a year on a 9 month academic year contract and taking a one semester sabbatical would be responsible for taking 18 hours of furlough time throughout the course of the contract.
  • A faculty member whose salary is $50,000 a year on a 9 month academic year contract and taking an academic year sabbatical would have a reduced salary of $30,000 and would be responsible for taking 6 hours of furlough time throughout the course of the contract.

Can I take furlough time while on sabbatical?
Yes. While on sabbatical, a faculty member is still on contract and would be able to take furlough time.

Can I work outside of the university doing consulting or other work during furlough time?
Yes, provided the work does not pose a conflict of interest and is disclosed according to the regular parameters for outside employment.

If I have assignments in more than one department, do I have to take furlough time for each of these roles?
The total amount of furlough time that you would take would be calculated on the total amount of your current salary as it is tied to a specific contract. If you are paid from more than one department, the furlough time should be split according to the time spent in each department. This split should be discussed and coordinated with the chair or director in both units.
