Purpose of Classification
    Determines scope of remodeling and renovation projects; prepares the program document, designs, modifies and prepares detailed drawings, cost estimates and specifications for use of university shops. Projects over $10,000 are contracted out.
Distinguishing Characteristics
    This is a specialized position and not part of a series.
Example of Duties
  • Confers with users to determine project requirements and scope of the project; develops preliminary design concept on each proposed project.
  • Develops cost estimates and recommends to users cost effective alternatives.
  • Produces final designs, working drawings and specifications of projects in which the university physical plant will perform the construction.
  • Assists in the selection of design consultants for large projects requiring outside contract services and conveys project requirements and design criteria to consultants.
  • Reviews consultant's completed design drawings and specifications ensuring that technical and code requirements are met.
  • Coordinates preparation of bid documents for outside contractors to bid and construct, relaying information to bidders such as the needs of the client, the trades to be involved and the estimated start date.
  • Manages on-going construction by contractors for selected projects or in-house university construction to ensure that work being done complies with plans and specifications and is progressing on schedule.
  • Electrical and Mechanical Design Coordinators provide assistance, in their discipline, to other staff in developing and reviewing major projects.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of architectural, engineering, design and drafting principles, practice, methods and equipment.
  • Knowledge of engineering and architectural mathematical calculations relative to technical drafting work.
  • Skill in preparing and interpreting drawings, graphs, charts, maps and legal descriptions.
  • Ability to effectively communicate.
  • The ability to work effectively with people from a variety of culturally diverse backgrounds.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Architecture, Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering or a related field AND one year design experience; OR,
  • Five years of design experience; OR
  • Any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education.
